Dear Friends in Christ,

On a recent trip to Rome, I had the opportunity to meet our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. I thanked him for his Fidelity to God’s call in his life. It is that fidelity which I believe pleases God most in any of us. It is not whether we become Pope, find a cure for AIDS or do any other great thing in life. It is simply about doing the small, apparently insignificant things in life with love and dedication. As our diocesan patroness St. Therese of the Child Jesus reminds us, we can all please God just as surely as our Holy Father does by simply being faithful.

Once again, through this year’s Diocesan Ministry Fund, we can respond to Jesus’ personal call: “I was hungry and you fed me, naked and you clothed me, sick and imprisoned and you came to visit.” By supporting the many important charitable works of our diocese, we are being “Church” and have an opportunity to faithfully respond to these essential works of love. As we seek to be faithful, God wants us to know that this fidelity will not go unrewarded. Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, demonstrated that fidelity by embarking on a difficult State Visit to Great Britain the day after our visit. That fidelity was greatly rewarded by a wonderfully successful trip, and our fidelity will be rewarded too.

Queridos Amigos en Cristo,

Durante un viaje reciente a Roma, tuve la oportunidad de conocer a nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Benedicto XVI. Le di las gracias por su Fidelidad a la llamada de Dios en su vida. Es esa fidelidad, la cual yo creo le agrada más a Dios en cualquiera de nosotros. No se trata de llegar a ser el Papa, de encontrar una curación para la SIDA o de lograr algo grande en la vida. Se trata simplemente de hacer lo pequeño, aparentemente insignificante, en la vida con amor y dedicación. Como nos recuerda Santa Teresa del Niño Jesús, nuestra patrona diocesana, todos podemos complacer a Dios por simplemente ser fieles, como sin duda lo hace nuestro Santo Padre.

Una vez más por medio del Fondo del Ministerio Diocesano anual, podemos responder a la llamada personal de Jesús, “Tuve hambre y me dieron de comer, me faltó ropa y me la dieron, estuve enfermo y encarcelado y me visitaron”. Al apoyar a las muchas obras caritativas e importantes de nuestra diócesis, somos “Iglesia” y tenemos la oportunidad de responder fielmente a estas obras esenciales de amor. Mientras procuramos de ser fieles, Dios quiere que sepamos que esta fidelidad no será sin recompensa. Nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Benedicto XVI, demostró esa fidelidad por embarcar en una Visita de Estado difícil a Gran Bretaña el día después de nuestra visita. Esa fidelidad fue enormemente recompensada por un viaje maravillosamente exitoso. Nuestra fidelidad a la llamada de Dios también será.
